As feed-in tariffs decline and battery rebates drive demand, regional and metro customers are turning to integrated solar and battery storage solutions.

In response to these changing needs, the training packages used for upskilling renewable energy workers have been updated, and we have released our new Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems course.

This course is delivered over six days, face-to-face and covers the design and practical application of installing battery storage equipment to power conversion equipment (PCE) including the different types of battery storage equipment and PCE and the compliance standards when connecting a battery storage system to the grid.

Course description

This course has been designed by experienced solar installers, accredited through Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA). Completing a course to Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems will allow you to offer more electrical services and open the door to higher-value projects and future employment opportunities.

This course includes the following units:

  • UEERE0054 Conduct site survey for grid-connected photovoltaic and battery storage systems
  • UEERE0060 Design grid-connected battery storage systems 
  • UEERE0077 Install battery storage equipment power conversion equipment to grid
  • UEERE0078 Install battery storage to power conversion equipment.

To enrol in this course, you must be an A Grade licensed electrician and meet the required prerequisites.

Our course is delivered in person so you can gain hands-on training and ask questions as you need. The Design & install grid-connected battery storage systems course is delivered at either our campus in Carlton North or in Ballarat.

Course details

To enrol in this course, you must be an A Grade licensed electrician.

This course builds on the knowledge from the Design & install grid-connected PV systems course, so a prerequisite for enrolment is a Statement of Attainment in the following Unit of Competency:

UEERE0061 – Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems

and/or Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation:

Grid Connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPV) Design and Install

If your previous solar training is different to the above, please give us a call to discuss your options.

Students may apply for RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) or Credit Transfer (CT) in accordance with the NECA Education & Careers Recognition of RPL or CT Policy.

This course runs over six days and will provide you with the necessary qualifications to apply for accreditation from Solar Accreditation Australia for the Grid Connect Battery Storage systems accreditation. The training is delivered face-to-face, where hands-on experience using premium equipment and technologies is provided.

Day 1 (UEERE0054)* covers the foundational knowledge and skills needed to be able to safely approach a domestic or small commercial building and navigate the complexities of surveying the site and recording the measurements and observations to inform design.

*If you already hold UEERE0054 Conduct Site Survey from your previous solar training, please give us a call to arrange a credit transfer for this unit

Days 2-4 (UEERE0060) cover the knowledge & skills of how to design a grid connected battery system for a domestic or a small commercial building using the site survey documents combined with stakeholder consultation to best align with the customers’ expectations.

Days 5-6 (UEERE0077 & UEERE0078) (A Grade electricians only) cover the installation of the equipment procured to suit the above designs. You will learn how to install Batteries, DC wiring, Isolators, PCE, AC wiring, Data cables, Labels, and a Wi-Fi connection. You will also learn to Test & Commission two systems to ensure compliancy to the requirements of all current standards and regulations.

Ballarat

Your trainer in Ballarat is Robbie Nichols. Robbie shares the benefits of his years of solar experience with you during the course.

Robbie has over 25 years of experience working with clients throughout the Geelong and regional areas, and has been a trainer with NECA E&C since 2024.

Carlton North

Your trainer at our Carlton North campus is Allen Burrows. Allen shares the benefits of his years of general electrical, and 16 years of solar experience with you during the course.

Allen has gained his experience in solar installations by working for several solar companies, firstly as a trade hand, followed by time as a team leader then as a supervisor. This gave him knowledge and experience of all aspects of solar design and installation before commencing his own solar business more than a decade ago, and he is still busy in design and installation work.

  • AS/NZS 1170.2 – Structural design actions, Part 2: Wind actions
  • AS/NZS 4509.2 – Essential safety and installation requirements for stand-alone power systems used for the supply of extra-low (ELV) and low voltage (LV) electric power.
