NECA Electro-start is a special-intake program, subsidised by the electrical industry, for the most enthusiastic and bright future electricians to start their careers.

If you’re keen to get into an electrical apprenticeship, we invite you to register for the NECA Electro-start program. In this course, you will study Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) UEE22020, as well as gain credits for further training as an apprentice or trainee in the electrotechnology industry.  You will also have the opportunity to secure an electrical apprenticeship with NECA.

Electricians are in demand across many key sectors, including construction, manufacturing, and mining, and you can gain experience in the trade through this course.

The Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start) can prepare you for many roles, including apprentice electrician, apprentice refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic and more.

Course description

The UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start)) will prepare you for an apprenticeship in the electrotechnology industry.

You’ll get hands-on training in trade-school training environments. It covers operational skills and knowledge such as electrical safety, Industry Standards and Regulations, identifying and selecting components, accessories, and materials, solving circuit problems, modern sustainable practices and more. You’ll learn about electrical wiring and equipment, electrical drawing, electrical regulations, test instruments, and communications skills. The course also covers computer software applications, applied electricity and workplace health and safety.

The course aims to make you job-ready, and enables you to develop broad-based competencies in a range of electrotechnology fields.

This course is your entry into the electrical trades and gives you real skills you can take with you into an apprenticeship

Electrical theory, mathematics and general practical skills are taught, along with how to interpret electrical drawings. You will gain a good appreciation of the basic tools and equipment an electrician uses on the job.

Plus, when you complete the pre-app course, what you’ve studied can be ‘recognised prior learning’ for the UEE30820 Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician course. This RPL reduces the number of units of study for the Cert III, which means more on-the-job apprenticeship experience. It’s a win-win.

Course details

In this course we cover the following units of study:

Core units

  • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
  • UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • UEECD0009 Carry out routine work activities in an energy sector environment
  • UEECD0021 Identify and select components, accessories and materials for energy sector work activities
  • UEECD0038 Provide solutions and report on routine electrotechnology problems
  • UEECD0046 Solve problems in single-path circuits
  • UEECD0052 Use of routine equipment plant technologies in an energy sector environment
  • UEERE0021 Provide basic sustainable energy solutions for energy management in residential premises

Elective units

  • UEECD0051 Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • UEECD0019 Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utility industry components
  • UEECD0008 Carry out preparatory energy sector work activities
  • UEECD0020 Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment

You may find this course is for you if:

    • You are at least 16 years of age.
    • You have completed Year 12 of school, or are just about to.
    • You have the right to live and study in Australia (eligibility requirement for an Australian Electrical Apprenticeship)
    • You’re keen to continue learning.
    • You’re serious about finding out if an electrical career is for you.

These requirements may also help you decide.

Physical:

    • Perform basic electrical measurements using appropriate instruments.
    • Assemble and connect basic electrical components according to instructions.
    • Identify and rectify straightforward electrical system faults.

Cognitive/Emotional:

    • Identify basic electrical issues and suggest solutions.
    • Follow established procedures to troubleshoot common electrical problems.
    • Seek assistance for complex issues.
    • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
    • Contribute to team tasks under direct guidance.
    • Seek feedback to improve work practices.

Experience:

    • Demonstrate basic understanding of electrical concepts.
    • Apply elementary mathematical calculations relevant to electrotechnology.
    • Interpret simple technical drawings and diagrams.

Industry:

    • Follow basic safety procedures and practices.
    • Demonstrate awareness of relevant safety regulations.
    • Contribute to maintaining a safe work environment.

To be eligible for entry into this program and the pre-apprenticeship course, students must be at least 16 years of age.

While there are no specific entry requirements for this qualification, this course is not recommended if you find Yr10 mathematics challenging.

PTR and Language, literacy and numeracy

To determine suitability for this course each eligible applicant will participate in a mandatory four-hour pre-training review (PTR) session that includes a maths aptitude test and a literacy assessment. The in-person PTR will be held at our Carlton North campus before course commencement.

The PTR outcome will determine course suitability and if additional support may be required, and includes:

  • Completion of a language, literacy & numeracy (LLN) assessment to confirm you meet the required skill levels for training
  • Confirmation that you can use a computer/laptop
  • Completion of a separate maths aptitude test that will be used to inform you of any additional learning you may need to complete if you wish to progress to UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.

We use an approved online skills review tool to determine your language, literacy and numeracy skills within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

Dates for the PTR sessions will be advised after we have received and reviewed your application.

The course can prepare you for an electrical apprenticeship. It can also make you an attractive candidate to employers as you’ll be prepared for the apprentice role and already be able to show your commitment to the trade.

Upon successful completion of the NECA Electro-start program, and if you have found employment as an electrical apprentice, you may choose to complete the UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.

If you start an apprenticeship after successful completion of the Certificate II in Electrotechnology, the schooling component of your apprenticeship training may be reduced through CT or RPL.

Credit transfer is the recognition of academic credits gained through formal study (i.e. units of competency) completed either at another institute or in another qualification. The total amount of credit will vary from individual to individual, based on the unit/s that have been successfully completed.

RPL is a formal assessment process that recognises relevant skills and knowledge you have already gained through previous training, work and life experiences. Please contact Student Services to discuss your options for RPL.

The NECA Electro-start pre-apprenticeship program will teach you the basic theory, with practical skills training taking place in our simulated practical workshop area on campus.

Electrical safety plays a major part in the course too, so for the work simulations carried out on campus in the workshop, you will require work-wear, work boots and clear safety glasses.

At NECA we use an online learning platform – Sparky LMS – and operate a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) approach to learning. We expect you to have a laptop and the necessary computer skills needed to comfortably participate in the course.
