In response to the changing needs of the renewable energy sector, the training packages used for upskilling renewable energy workers have been updated, and NECA Education & Careers has responded to this update by releasing our new Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems course.

This course covers the design and practical application of installing battery storage equipment to power conversion equipment (PCE) including the different types of battery storage equipment and PCE and the compliance standards when connecting a battery storage system to the grid.

Course Description

This course has been designed by an experienced solar installer, accredited through Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) and well known in the industry from previous roles held with the Clean Energy Council.

Completing a course to Design and install grid-connected battery storage systems will allow you to offer more electrical services and can increase your future employment opportunities.

The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) recently made significant changes to the accreditation process, impacting all Solar and Battery Installers and Designers.

Any individual who wishes to design or install Grid-connected PV systems (GCPV) or Grid-connected battery systems (GCBS), must now be accredited under the SAA Scheme to be eligible for small-scale technology certificates (STCs).

In addition, many state-based rebate or subsidy programs require the installer to be an SAA accredited installer.

Course Details

To enrol in this course, you must be a licensed electrical practitioner.

This course builds on the knowledge from the Design & install grid-connected photovoltaic systems course, so a prerequisite for enrolment is a Statement of Attainment in the following Unit of Competency:

  • UEERE0061 – Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems

and/or

Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accreditation:

  • Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPV) Design and Install

If your previous solar training is different to the above, please give us a call to discuss your options.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to apply to Solar Accreditation Australia has further information on their website outlining the requirements to apply for accreditation.

Successful completion of this course provides you with the knowledge and skills required to apply for SAA accreditation and the ability to demonstrate the:

  • Knowledge & skills to safely survey a site and create a site survey document.
  • Knowledge & skills to design a compliant & high-performance oriented battery & PCE power supply system.
  • Ability to install, then test & commission a Battery & PCE generation system compliantly.
  • Knowledge & skills to find solutions to operate, maintain and fault-find Battery energy apparatus and systems.

Students who successfully complete all assessments of this course will receive a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency, meeting the training component of Solar Accreditation Australia’s for GCBS Design & Installation:

  • UEERE0054 Conduct site survey for grid-connected photovoltaic and battery storage systems.
  • UEERE0060 Design grid-connected battery storage systems.
  • UEERE0077 Install battery storage to power conversion equipment.
  • UEERE0078 Install battery storage equipment power conversion equipment to grid

Students may apply for Credit Transfer (CT) or RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) in accordance with the NECA Education & Careers Recognition of CT or RPL Policy.

Course Overview

Training is delivered in-person, over six (6) days at our Tasmanian locations, where hands-on experience using premium equipment and technologies is provided.

Day 1 (UEERE0054)* covers the foundational knowledge and skills needed to be able to safely approach a domestic or small commercial building and navigate the complexities of surveying the site and recording the measurements and observations to inform design.

Days 2-4 (UEERE0060) cover the knowledge & skills of how to design a grid connected battery system for a domestic or a small commercial building using the site survey documents combined with stakeholder consultation to best align with the customers’ expectations.

Days 5-6 (UEERE0077 & UEERE0078) (A Grade electricians only) cover the installation of the equipment procured to suit the above designs. You will learn how to install Batteries, DC wiring, Isolators, PCE, AC wiring, Data cables, Labels, and a Wi-Fi connection. You will also learn to Test & Commission two systems to ensure compliancy to the requirements of all current standards and regulations.

We recommend obtaining current copies of the following Australian Standards, which are available for purchase from NECA Education & Careers, or the Intertek Inform website, and are also available from some libraries, institutions, and industry associations:

  • AS/NZS 5033 – Installation and safety requirements for photovoltaic (PV) arrays
  • AS/NZS 4777.1 – Grid connection of energy systems via inverters
  • AS/NZS 5139 Electrical installations – Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment
  • AS/NZS 3000 – Electrical installations (known as the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules)
  • AS/NZS 3008.1.1 – Electrical installations – Selection of cables, Part 1.1: Cables for alternating voltages up to and including 0.6/1
  • kV – Typical Australian installation conditions
  • AS/NZS 1170.2 – Structural design actions, Part 2: Wind actions
  • AS/NZS 4509.2 – Essential safety and installation requirements for stand-alone power systems used for the supply of extra-low (ELV) and low voltage (LV) electric power.

Students will also require the following:

  • A laptop with an internet connection
  • A scientific calculator
  • An email account (which we encourage you to check regularly)
